Happy Earth Day 2026

Earth Day is a reminder that protecting the environment depends on both community action and everyday personal choices. First established in 1970, it continues to encourage efforts that support cleaner air, water, and land through volunteer work, conservation, and public awareness.

Across Oregon, communities are marking Earth Day with cleanup projects, restoration work, and educational activities. Planned efforts include:

Portland — Laurelhurst Park: park cleanup, litter removal, recycling education, and community outreach
Eugene — Alton Baker Park: habitat restoration along the Willamette River and sustainability information booths
Medford — Hawthorne Park/Bear Creek: creek cleanup and litter removal
Ashland — Lithia Park: informal volunteer trail and landscape cleanup
Grants Pass — Riverside Park: cleanup of the Rogue River banks and nearby public areas
These events are meant to improve local spaces while also building awareness of larger issues such as pollution, drought, waste, and conservation.

Earth Day also highlights simple ways individuals can contribute in daily life:

~Use local recycling programs correctly
~Volunteer for park, river, or street cleanups
~Support green businesses
~Choose reusable products instead of disposable ones
~Repurpose old items
~Shop secondhand and thrift stores
~Conserve water by fixing leaks and reducing unnecessary use
~Cut energy use with efficient appliances
~Walk, bike, carpool, or combine errands to reduce driving
~Encourage companies to reduce packaging
~Plant native species that use less water and support pollinators
